Baby Clothes and Essentials You'll Need

Before your baby is born, you will want to make sure you have all of the clothes and essential items you'll need once you bring your baby home.

Babies grow quickly, so you will want to make sure you keep a range of clothes on hand to accommodate your baby’s growth for the first few months of life.

Your baby’s layette needs to be practical in nature, fancy dresses or funky sweaters are cute, but for the first few months of their life, your baby only needs the most basic of outfits.

A new baby’s wardrobe should contain approximately 10 onsies, 10 slip-on (side-snap) shirts, a half dozen sleep and play outfits, a half dozen gowns, and about 5 pairs of pants. You will also want to make sure you have a few caps on hand, plus booties and little socks to keep your baby’s head and tiny feet snug. Make sure you look for clothes made of cotton or other soft, breathable fabrics; the last thing you want is to buy clothes that are itchy or harsh against your baby’s skin.

In addition to clothes, you will need to have a supply of bibs and at least a dozen burp cloths on hand so that you can protect (and clean up!) your baby’s clothes while they eat. Bath time requires towels and wash clothes for baby too, so make sure you keep at least a half dozen on hand – hooded baby towels are especially cute and keep them warm once out of the tub.

Soft blankets are essential for soothing and swaddling babies, so make sure to have at least six on hand. For bedtime, always keep at least a few waterproof mattress pads on hand, as well as several sets of crib sheets. You don’t want to run out of these in the middle of the night if your baby wets the bed!

Once you’ve compiled your baby’s layette, you need to launder everything before it can touch your baby’s skin. Chemicals used in the manufacture and production of baby clothes and linens can irritate the skin of babies, so it’s important to ensure everything is clean before using. Look for laundry detergents that are specifically made for babies, or that are free from fragrances or dyes.

After your baby’s clothes and linens are clean and dry, you can put everything away in your nursery and feel confident that you will have everything you need to care for your baby once they come home.
