What Causes Gas

  • Baby’s immature digestive system contains very few of the stomach juices needed to
    break down food

Symptoms of Gas

  • Pulls legs up
  • Lies in a curled position
  • Bloated

Ways to Lessen Gas

  • Burp your baby every 3-5 minutes while nursing or feeding
  • Avoid “gassy” foods while nursing: beans, bran, broccoli, brussels sprouts,
    cabbage, caulifl ower, caffeine, dairy and onions
  • Give your baby infant gas drops to gently break up the gas bubbles

Symptoms of Colic

  • 3 hours of crying for 3 days a week for more than 3 weeks
  • Crying constantly, usually at the same time every day, late in the afternoon or evening
  • High pitched squeal; trouble catching their breath

What to Do When Baby is Crying

  • Stay calm
  • Take a time-out … put baby in a safe place and take a 10 minute break
  • Talk to your baby’s health care provider for advice and support
