What Causes Gas
- Baby’s immature digestive system contains very few of the stomach juices needed to
break down food
Symptoms of Gas
- Pulls legs up
- Lies in a curled position
- Bloated
Ways to Lessen Gas
- Burp your baby every 3-5 minutes while nursing or feeding
- Avoid “gassy” foods while nursing: beans, bran, broccoli, brussels sprouts,
cabbage, caulifl ower, caffeine, dairy and onions - Give your baby infant gas drops to gently break up the gas bubbles
Symptoms of Colic
- 3 hours of crying for 3 days a week for more than 3 weeks
- Crying constantly, usually at the same time every day, late in the afternoon or evening
- High pitched squeal; trouble catching their breath
What to Do When Baby is Crying
- Stay calm
- Take a time-out … put baby in a safe place and take a 10 minute break
- Talk to your baby’s health care provider for advice and support
