Safe Home for Baby
Several helpful steps every parent should follow to make your home a safe and healthy environment before bringing baby home.

Infants and toddlers learn about the world by tasting, touching and feeling


Around the House

  • Smoke detectors on each floor
  • Keep an escape ladder in bedroom of multi-level home
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector
  • Check for asbestos
  • Check for lead
  • Place window-blind cords up high
  • Set your water heater to a maximum of 120 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Cover all electrical outlets and power strips with safety covers
  • Keep lamp cords out of the way or behind furniture
  • Move fans up high
  • Keep plastic bags out of sight
  • Put away balloons and throw out broken balloons immediately
  • Secure bookshelves, entertainment centers and bureaus to the walls
  • Pad sharp edges on furniture
  • Install safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs
  • Keep the phone number for poison control near your phone
  • Keep carpets and fl oors clean of food, debris and dust when baby starts to crawl
  • Use disinfecting cleaning products as directed to kill common household germs

Kitchen

  • Wipe down the sink, counters, high chairs, door knobs and trash cans with disinfectants as directed
  • Install latches on the oven door and refrigerator
  • Install knob covers for the stove
  • Move cleaning supplies to a high place
  • Keep sharp knives separate from the safe utensils
  • Keep trash compactor closed
  • Keep dishwasher closed

Bathroom

  • Thoroughly disinfect the sink, toilet and floors
  • Close the lid to help avoid spreading germs
  • Install lid locks on all toilets
  • Keep the lid closed to prevent drowning and from slamming on your baby’s head or hands
  • Keep all medicines in a locked cabinet or out of baby’s reach
  • Unplug all electrical appliances, such as hair dryers and razors when you’re not using them
    and put them out of sight

Nursery

  • Daily disinfect the changing table and diaper disposal
  • Regularly disinfect toys to help reduce bacteria, and other germs
  • Wind up window blind cords or cut them in half to prevent strangulation
